Philippa Brinkman

Name: Philippa Brinkman

I am a breast cancer survivor! After being diagnosed at 35 years old, I am living proof that early detection can save a life! I did it all; the fear, the over-thinking, the chemo, the bi-lateral mastectomy and the privileged of coming out on the other side. If there’s anything that’ll motivate you to live life to the fullest, it’s a life-threatening diagnosis. It’s been 7 years since my diagnosis. I’m cancer free, fit and healthy. Everyday is an ‘I’ve been granted another day on the planet’ adventure for me. I’ve taken on marathons, ultra-marathons and mountain biking ever since. People are still reticent to talk about breast cancer. Wearing ILoveBoobies apparel, having the stickers on my helmet and buying the socks for my friends has opened conversations about the organisation and what you do. It’s important that those of us that have had the privileged of excellent medical treatment do our bit ensure that others are also given that opportunity.

Words to live by? Let’s be adventurers!

It’s an opportunity for anyone and everyone to help. I searched for a long time for a charity that made me feel like I was making a difference (before coming across ILoveBoobies). I am a teacher, I don’t have much to give, financially, but I know that each pair of socks I buy or get someone else to buy, contributes to helping someone somewhere is South Africa. It feels ‘do-able’ for your average South African.
