Annual Budget Bike Trip raises R17000

Out on the open Karoo roads, where the wind carries stories further than signal bars ever could, ordinary folk are quietly doing extraordinary things.

For the seventh year running, Eben Kruger and his mates set off on their annual Budget Bike Trip — not for speed, comfort, or glory, but for purpose. Every year brings a new route and a new theme. This time, it was delivery bikes: humble, hardworking machines that mirror the spirit of the journey itself.

They began in Sutherland, loading bikes onto trailers, nerves buzzing with anticipation. From there, the road pulled them down Ouberg Pass, on to Middelpos, and back again — a rough, beautiful loop through wide skies and empty distances. Around 350 kilometres in just three and a half days, with no illusion that it would be easy.

Progress was slow. It always is. Flat tyres. Broken plastics. Mechanical gremlins that appear exactly when you least need them. Tools came out on gravel shoulders. Hands got dirty. Patience was tested. Behind them, a backup bakkie and trailer followed faithfully, carrying two scooters, spares, drinks, and the quiet heroes of the trip — the support crew.

Along the way, they met people. Farmers. Passers-by. Curious onlookers wondering why a group of grown men would choose discomfort over convenience. Conversations happened. Stories were shared. And each time, the reason surfaced: ILoveBoobies. A simple explanation. A link sent. A seed planted.

Most of the support didn’t come from strangers — it came from those who know them best. Friends, families, and loved ones who understand the madness, the setbacks, the laughter, and the stubborn determination it takes to keep going when the road is unforgiving.

By the time the bikes rolled back into Sutherland, dusty and battered, the impact was clear. Through personal giving, family support, and friends backing the journey, R17 000 was raised — funding free breast cancer screenings for women who need them most.

No medals waited at the finish. No crowds cheered them home. Just tired bodies, dusty bikes, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that because ordinary people chose to show up again, real lives will be changed.

This is what making a difference often looks like.
Unpolished. Uncomfortable. Unstoppable.
